The Hemisphere At NightChris Coteff
Here we are in the first February of the new century that includes a leap
day. So February has 29 days
in it. This February 29th
is a day unlike any other in the last four centuries.
But more about that a little later. Each evening
at nightfall the scene in the western sky holds an ever-shortening line of
three naked-eye planets, which are joined briefly at, midmonth by Mercury. The only bright planet missing is Venus.
Jupiter is easily the brightest followed by Saturn and then Mars
being the dimmest. What is
noticeable if you get out there a few times to look is that distance
between the three planets is getting shorter.
This is happening because the Earth is moving around its orbit
faster than the other three planets that make them seem to move towards
each other. So get out there
and look! The Moon this
month helps us to locate these three planets.
Look for the crescent Moon on February 8th and Mars will
be nearby, Jupiter on the 10th and Saturn on the 11th. For those of
you who need more of a challenge and like to get up early before the Sun
comes up, look for dim Neptune at a Moon’s width north of brilliant
Venus on the morning of the 22nd.
You’ll need binoculars and a steady hand to view this faint far
off world that was only discovered in 1846. As we have known since ancient times, the year is about a quarter of a day longer than 365 days. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar instituted the Julian Calendar in which the shortfall was made up by adding a “leap day” every four years. However, the Earth’s orbit is closer to 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes! The Julian Calendar overshoots by about 44 minutes very leap year. This is a very small amount, but over the centuries it adds up. After 400 years, the overshoot is about three days. 1600 years after Julius Caesar, the spring equinox was arriving on March 11th instead of the traditional March 21st. So Pope Gregory got involved in 1582 and invented the Gregorian Calendar. They dropped 10 whole days in October going from October 4th followed by October 15th. I wonder what people did if they had a birthday on one of the days dropped? Additionally, the Pope said that century years would not be leap years except every 400 years, thus dropping 3 days every 400 years. And this year –2000- will be the first century leap year since 1600, the only other time in history that this unusual exception to the rule has been invoked! Enjoy it! |
Rita’s
Romantic Ramblings
It’s February, my favorite month of the year. This is the time of year when a girls’ thoughts drift off into that wonderful world of romance. Flowers, chocolate, wine and valentines are the order of the month and I pity the man who forgets his “little miss magic” on the 14th. But listen girls, it’s a new century and we can be the masters of our destiny in this realm of romance. This leap year brings us an extra day
in February and, I as recall my high school years (oh my, that was several
decades ago), that always meant that there would be a Sadie Hawkins Dance. For many of us this dance provided us with the one chance we
had to turn the tables and ask a boy out for a date! To some of you youngsters, I know this doesn’t sound so
peculiar but to those of us who have been around since Jimmy released A1A
this was a momentous occasion. And
to some of us, well Sadie Hawkins or not we let our desires be known to
that special someone we admired. So girls, let’s take advantage of
the season to show that special someone in our life that we want him for
our “King of Somewhere Hot.” With
some JB on the stereo and a little romance in our hearts let’s “Bring
Back the Magic” and warm up February with a healthy dose of old
fashioned romance.
